This is a Timber-Tech Staircase. The wedge is used to secure the tread in the dado.
This insures that the tread will
always be held tightly in the dado.

As you can see, this tread is toenailed from the underside!?
Due to that fact there is a space between the tread and dado this tread is now being supported by nails and not the dado as they had intended!

This stair is in the Currie Barracks
housing complex. These house's
were built aroud 1945-1960.
As you can see, the tread and riser are both wedged. The homeowner
had gutted the house, but expected to save the stairs. Apparently they were still structurally sound.
Timber-Tech did not make this staircase, we are using it as a example of how a wedged stair will pass the test of time!

Excuse me, may I see your drivers licensce please?

Where will this tread be in 40 years?

Even more importantly,

Where will this tread be in 2 years?

This staircase is in the Lakeview area. It has waterfall riser. It features a laminated fir tread and a 1x10 fir riser. The stringers are 2x12 fir.
Among other details it has a mitred riser/stringer. The carpenter who buiilt this stair knew what he was doing.

The type of joinery found in this staircase is prone to failure.

At Timber-Tech Stairs we have a saying:

"Some things are not a matter of if, just when."
